Festive fun at the annual Mardi Gras Speech and Debate Tournament!

Greetings!

Yesterday I spent the whole day (7AM to 8PM) at Shrewsbury High School to participate in the annual Mardi Gras Speech and Debate Tournament! I performed a prose selection from J. K. Rowling’s book “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”. The enormous number (800+ middle and high school students from all over the state) of attending competitors astounded me! Excited about the challenge of competing with high school students, I employed every dramatic skill I knew. However, I felt like an outsider because the light, exciting tone of my selection contrasted to the mature drama of my opponents’ pieces. After the three preliminary rounds ended, I crossed my fingers and hoped that I would make it to the semifinals.

During lunch, I anxiously anticipated my results. Did I advance to the next round? How did I do against the high school students? When the advancing prose contestants were posted in the main lobby, I dashed there as fast as I could. With high hopes, I scanned the semifinalist list – and groaned silently at the fact that I had not advanced. I also realized that I now had about 6 hours of waiting time before the awards ceremony began.

Following the advice of some of my friends, I watched the Team Improvisation Final Round. In that round, 6 teams of two people create a skit from two random characters at two random places. Each performance was hilarious, but the Donald Trump/mermaid skit was the funniest. After that, I went to the Lincoln-Douglas debate finals. The debaters’ speedy speeches were like riding a car at 100 mph!

At the awards ceremony, Shrewsbury’s speech and debate teams won big, scoring 1st place on many topics (among them Dramatic Performance and Children’s Literature). Shrewsbury High School ranked 1st place in the competition. Overall, it was a great competition!
