Success at my second speech tournament!

Wahoo!

I had astounding improvement at my second speech tournament held at Oak Middle School! It was held from about 9 AM to about 4:30 PM on Sunday, January 24, 2016. I participated in the Prose competition and my piece was a selection (Chapter 4, “The Quidditch World Cup”, to be exact) from J. K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”.

At the first round, I excitedly anticipated my turn to speak. Could I outshine every one of my competitors, or would I plummet to a failure? After my three speeches, with a cracked voice from shouting and sore feet from standing, I bounced around the cafeteria, gobbling down my lunch (plus a few snacks) and inquiring my prose teammates, “How’d you do? Did you think you did well? What was your piece?”

Thirty minutes passed and I was anxiously fidgeting in my seat. I peppered myself with questions about my speaking: Was I good enough? Did I practice well? What about my speed? As the spokesperson announced the list of finalists, I had a tinge of hope that I, by sheer luck, had made it to the coveted final round. Finally, the announcer made it to the Prose list – and I burst from my seat, suppressing a scream of joy as I was declared a finalist!

It was time for the final round. I couldn’t wait! I was called up to perform. Distracted by my happiness, I forgot my intro, stumbling over my words. I recovered as quickly as I had made my mistake and launched, with refueled ferocity, through my piece. Emphasizing the characters and gesturing wildly, I gave my best performance of the day. I was holding my breath as I made it back to my seat.

I made 7th place in the tournament! Although I had hoped for placing 5th or above, I was happy I had made such a tremendous leap of progress!

Below are the photos (and a video).

Until next post,
David:)
