Danny and the Portal of the World (mind if I just call it DPW? It will make it much easier to write. Good? Good.) is a fun science fiction/science fantasy chapter book. At the time of publication, author David T Lee was only 7 years old. The book was a fun read, and I could see younger kids loving this book. The author weaves a sense of magic and wonder into the book that gives it that fun feel.

The novel is a short read, with shorter chapters, and will keep young readers engaged and interested. The pacing of the novel is great, and never gets disinteresting. Mixed in with all the fun scenes and engaging storytelling is a little bit of humor that’s sure to make young readers laugh (I chuckled myself upon reading about Danny’s 3,000+ relatives). The plot is funny, as is much of the rest of the story, and readers of many ages will laugh at the humor David has weaved into DPW.

The one thing that, above all else, blows me away is the skill of the author. Lee was only 7 years old when DPW was published, and the novel reads incredibly well. I can never get over the fact that he wrote it at such a young age.

The only problem I had with the book was that it had very little action to propel the plot along (although there is more action in the later installments in the series), but I’m sure the audience of this book will not even realize that.

To sum up, this book was whimsical, fun, and the author is very talented for his age.

This was a fast-paced novel and the author’s best work yet. It has great pacing and a plot line that is constantly shifting. Great for kids who love action.

Book review from April Jones Prince (Author of many award winning children books and a long time editor)

(For Danny and the Invasion of the Dinosaurs)

“David, you have always been a strong writer, but you are growing by leaps and bounds! It’s really fantastic to see. I think this was my favorite Danny story yet because the idea was so inventive (going back to the time of the meteor) and the dino villains are ones we are simultaneously fascinated with but also love to hate.

This is one action-packed adventure! And you are quite adept at imagining and writing it. I also love your stellar vocabulary and use of similes and metaphors, which make me feel like I am right there in your story.

That said, I am also a real fan of the plush and luxurious locations you invent. The Red Blossom Inn is awesome! I want to go there! I love your many details on pages 52 and 53. I also like that this scene lets us take a breather from all the high-speed action; it’s good for pacing. And it’s funny how we as readers let our guards down and take a deep breath, just like Danny and Johnny do.”

It was fun to attend the Fair and watch David share and showcase his work.
We really enjoyed having you participate in our Geek Fair.  You did a great job!
You all did a terrific job putting together David’s presentation, it looks very professional! Indeed, that was terrific experience for David, and he will learn more and more each time he does it. I’m sure he was such a big inspiration to the other kids. I am doing a school visit next week and was planning to mention David as proof that kids can be authors and illustrators too. I love the idea of the life-sized Danny, what a great interactive element. Congratulations on a successful first publicity event!
Thank you for reminding me about David’s blog, it is really wonderful and inspiring. He is an excellent writer!

From April Jones Prince, a longtime book author and freelance editor (Comment from Amazon.com)

(For Danny and the Portal of the World)
“A Great achievement: I was happy to read “Danny and the Portal of the World” and discover David T. Lee’s vivid imagination. The story has plenty of action, and there is obviously a very creative and fertile mind behind it. David has a fabulous vocabulary and great use of details, especially for being just seven years old. He also did a great job choosing which moments in the story to illustrate; the drawings of the 4,982 jeeps and SUVs and the amusement park are especially wonderful. All in all, a great achievement at such a young age!”
