MIT’s Summer HSSP is a wonderful educational experience!

Written By: David T. Lee - Aug• 26•17

Over the summer, I’ve been taking classes at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) as part of the university’s Summer HSSP program. Summer HSSP is a program that offers weekend classes at MIT for grades 7-12. The classes I took were “Quantitative Biology” and “Quantitative Chemistry and Regenerative Biology”. Each class was taught by a student (from universities like MIT and Harvard) majoring in the topic.

In Quantitative Biology one of the things I learned about was an equation that calculated the population of a species given competition over resources. I also learned about how John Nash (played by Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind) influenced game theory, which in turn changed the way we think about evolution and natural selection. In Quantitative Chemistry and Regenerative Biology, I learned how to calculate the dissociation of acids and bases. Also, in between classes, I could explore much of MIT’s campus. I read in one of MIT’s libraries and checked out several scientific displays.

Overall, the Summer HSSP program is a great opportunity for kids to learn firsthand from some of the most talented scholars in the country!

Bye!

David:)
